schulkin > So there's this plaza which is awesome because the community comes out to hang together. It's rather unique to see all ages hanging out. Noor observed how few places there are like this in, say, the suburbs of Cleveland. Where can you go in the suburbs and find old people and young people hanging out in the same place? A movie theater, when no one is interacting? American communities that I've been a part of don't generally seem very good at hanging out like this...with old and young and in between really all in their comfort zone. It was an interesting thought. Anyway, this photo only shows old people I guess. These photos are blurry because we didn't want to use the flash, cause it was a really nice scene and the flash would have been crass. This gazebo is full of older people who bring folding chairs, and then some of them bring instruments and they just have a jam session with old Puerto Rican classics. It was really special. This photo is more for our memories than for y'all. But that lady on the right was totally dancing, and she's totally old. Fun. Funny.
schulkin > The woman on the left was walking around with the microphone, rocking it like Celine Dion. You know she had it going on as a young lady, just as she does now. Note the old people dancing on the far right....
schulkin > One by one these gentlemen would show up and they would all shake the hand of everyone else. The gentlemen's club would convene for a minute or two, until a new fellow showed up for a round of greetings...
schulkin > The greatest chocolate cheesecake in the history of the universe.
schulkin > Even enjoyed heartily by the lactose intolerant...
schulkin > OK so we drove from San Juan, back to the resort for the night. The next morning we checked out and caught a ferry to the island of Vieques. Vieques is an island known for beautiful beaches, as well as years of the US Navy testing bombs there, spreading the joy of depleted uranium, agent orange, etc, etc, so now everyone there has cancer. Thanks, Navy! But it was still cool. We went to this small (and rather gringo-y) town called Esperanza, and stayed with a nice woman who is also an activist working on the Navy issue. Her house is called Casa de Kathy. This photo is of her backyard.
